Pregnancy: The First Trimester

Pregnancy is broken down into three trimesters (3-3-3=9 months). The first trimester of pregnancy is the first three months of pregnancy (or the first 12 weeks out of 40). The first trimester is a very exciting time because you have just found out you are pregnant. Also, your body is going through some of the biggest changes of your life! Some of these changes may not be very fun, however
The first trimester usually begins with a whirlwind of new emotions stemming from strong doses of hormones. Women will most likely undergo mood changes often. Other “side effects” that come directly from these new doses of hormones are headaches, dizziness, fatigue, heartburn, food cravings, food aversions, breast changes, and nausea

Most food aversions come from the heightened sense of smell that newly pregnant women usually acquire. If you keep yourself around things that smell good, you are less likely to become nauseated. However, sometimes you cannot help it, and are overwhelmed with a smell that you simply cannot handle.
Breast changes are more prominent during the first trimester than belly changes. Breasts begin to prepare themselves for producing milk by the end of the pregnancy. So, they slowly begin to grow larger. You will probably need a larger bra by the end of the first trimester

Nausea leads to the commonly known pregnancy symptom, “morning sickness”. Many women experience nausea and vomiting early in the day and then it slows down throughout the course of the day. It can be different for every woman, however. Some women will begin gaining weight during the first trimester, but some will lose a little due to the severity of their morning sickness

If you suspect you are pregnant, you should see your doctor as soon as possible. If you can’t make an appointment right away, I would suggest buying over the counter prenatal vitamins to hold you over until you doctor gives you some. You should have your first prenatal appointment between 8 and 12 weeks of pregnancy

Watch for bleeding. Bleeding is never good during pregnancy. It never hurts to call your doctor just to check on it. If you bleed, it does not mean that you WILL miscarry. Just call the doctor as a precaution. If you do have a miscarriage, the chances are, it will happen during the first trimester. Your chances of miscarrying decrease significantly after the first trimester

So, the joy of pregnancy comes with a price—at least in the first trimester! There are so many things to learn and so many things to look forward to. So, just sit back and try to relax. It’s a tough journey, but you will make it through the first twelve weeks! Health and happiness to you!
